What I'm Baking... Chocolate Chip Cookies

I bought a bag of chocolate chips a few months back, and they've been sitting in my pantry staring at me every time I open the door. Why did I buy them? I hope I'm not the only one who does this, but while grocery shopping (without a list, of course) I wander down each and every isle, and the wheels in my brain start turning and it plays tricks on me. Hence the bag of chocolate chips. "Grab a bag! Bake your husband some chocolate chip cookies! You haven't baked in a while! Do it!!" Peer pressure of my own brain, that's what made me buy that shiny package of milk chocolate chips!

A few weeks ago I'd had enough, time to do something with those chocolate chips! Where do you turn for a recipe these days? Why Pinterest, of course! After clicking on a few hundred recipes, and pinning a few, I was still no closer to making those chocolate chip cookies a reality. But seriously, who keeps Karo in their pantry?!

Yesterday, I decided to move the bag to another location in the pantry so it wouldn't be the first thing my eyes met when I opened the door. Clumsy me dropped the bag and it landed on it's back. Plain as day was the easiest chocolate chip recipe on the back of the package!

I decided that was a sign, and preheated the oven.

With the help of the cutest sous chef, ever...


the bag of chocolate chips are no longer lurking in the pantry!


The recipe (per the back of the package):

1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 packed light brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 eggs
2 - 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups (1 - 11.5 oz pkg.) Hershey's Milk Chocolate Chips

Preheat oven to 375°F.

Beat butter, sugars and vanilla in a large bowl until creamy. Add eggs, beat well. Stir together flour, baking soda and salt; gradually add to the butter mixture, beating until mixed well. Stir in chocolate chips. Drop by teaspoons onto an ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake for 10 minutes until lightly browned. Cool, and enjoy the softest, chewiest chocolate chip cookies, EVER!

Henson/Sowell Family Pictures

I'm a photographer. I think pictures are important. And anytime our family is all together, I make sure it's captured through the lens of a camera. Most of the time, those pictures don't involve having everyone in them, because someone has to push the button, right? Well this time, I invested in a wireless remote so our family pictures were complete.

Getting a seven month old to look at the camera when no one is behind it can be interesting. But we did manage to get a couple of family shots where she was looking. Of course before I could be in the pictures, I had to make sure the lighting, and settings were okay. This was the first time I tackled being photographer and subject, but I'm so happy with the outcome of the pictures! Enjoy!!

AC's First Zoo Experience...

We had a busy weekend, but it was also extremely fun, too. My family was in town for the weekend, and we enjoyed spending time with them.

I'm starting backwards and going forward with the posts about our weekend, and first up is our trip to The Birmingham Zoo. This was AC's first time to experience anything like this, and it was fun to see her reactions.
















We can't wait to go back and let her experience all the fun and sites, again!!

Maroon Friday

Hello Fall! I missed you!

It's no secret that Fall is my favorite time of year. I mean, what's not to love?! The crisp mornings, the ever changing color of nature, the comfort food... seriously, I love it all!

I broke out the Fall decorations a few weeks ago for the inside of the house, and we planted mums on the front porch. I still have a few things we need to add, like, pumpkins and some hay. And, AC has the cutest little outfit and I plan to take her picture with the pumpkins and hay in a few weeks.

Until we get the rest of it decorated for her pictures... here is a look at our front porch now. The MSU door hanger was custom made by one of the cutest gift shops nearby. We literally stop in Gifted at last once a week to visit with Paige and Allison.

Maroon Friday

It's no secret that we are huge Mississippi State fans. And, we were so happy to welcome a new little bulldog fan in this world in February. So far, she's watched two games with us screaming and yelling at the TV... and the best part is she LOVES it!

Oh Pizza Hut

We've had quite a few experiences with Pizza Hut in the past few years, especially this summer. And each time, Pizza Hut Cares has been wonderful with apologizing and sending us something to make up for the problem.

Last week while my parents were here visiting, we decided to order pizza to be delivered since it was already 7 p.m. They make it so simple online, and have options where I can choose light sauce, etc. And, you pay online so all you have to do is sign when they bring it to your door.

Well, last Thursday night after I placed the order for delivery, the delivery time was around 8:25; which we felt was ridiculous since we literally live over the mountain about five minutes from them. So on my confirmation email it listed a number to call if you had any changes or needed to cancel. Well, we didn't want to cancel, we just decided it was best to go pick up the pizza ourselves. I never spoke to the store, after all, these days you only speak to automated phone services. But after ten minutes of pushing 1, 0, #, and then staying on the line to wait for the next representative... I told them to let our store know I was coming to pick up our order. NOT to deliver it. He said perfect, and your order will be ready in fifteen minutes. Now, that's MUCH better than the hour and a half wait I was given before.

The Mr and I head over to Pizza Hut, and I see my name on the screen and it says, READY! So I give the girl at the counter my name and she tells me how much it will be. I explained to her that I paid online. She then has to get her manager, who decided he wanted to be rude and not explain why I needed to pay now, just kept telling me that I hadn't paid. FINALLY the Mr said something to him, and he calmed down and explained that they don't close out the order until after the pizza is delivered, and since it wasn't being delivered, they canceled my pre-authorization on my card. Why he didn't explain it like that in the first place, I'll never know.

We start to see panic spread on everyone's faces when they start looking for our pizzas. All while the Mr and I are looking at two large boxes with a smaller box for cheese sticks on top of it sitting on the counter to the left of everyone. After about five minutes of everyone whispering and looking all confused, the manager comes to us and tells us his delivery guy has our pizzas and he's in our driveway!! I said no problem, my parents are at home and can sign for them, I'll call them now. My dad answered the phone and he said, there is no one in the driveway, but I'll keep a look out for them. And as soon as I was talking to him about not paying, etc... the manager yells out... FOUND IT. Yep, it was the pizza boxes we were looking at the entire time.

Here's the best part... the manager had already told the girl making the pizzas to make us another round, and it was in the oven. So, he asked us to wait another 8-10 minutes and we would have hot pizzas. And he gave us the original order, too. So needless to say, we had PLENTY of pizza and should have invited the neighbors over. And we still got home and were eating our dinner waaay before our delivery was scheduled to arrive. We were cleaning up the kitchen when I took the pictures below, at 8:32 p.m.


Oh, and we still have pizza leftovers in the fridge! Thanks again Pizza Hut for always making our experiences with you memorable.

Hi again...

I feel like I've published this post before, but yet, this is not a repeat. Even if I sound like a broken record. Yes, life has been reoccurring day after day, but that shouldn't be any excuse not to write. After all, writing is something that I love.

I few things have happened since my last "check in"...

• My last living grandparent passed away the middle of August. The last few months of her life she became very sick, and while no ones wants to see a loved one pass over into another life, we all knew it was time. She was ready to meet her maker, and go home. So we spent a few days in Mississippi with our family celebrating her life, and her homecoming.




• Our sweet girl turned six months old! SIX MONTHS OLD, y'all! Where was the time gone? She's weighing in at 21 pounds and 11 ounces. And she's 27.5 inches long! She sits up by herself, waves "bye bye" and laughs the cutest laugh. She thinks her big sister, Marsie Belle, is the funniest thing, next to her daddy, of course! Ganny and Papa have been coming by to see her and spoiling her rotten with kisses and attention, and she eats it up! Her favorite place is outside on our porch, and we can't wait for the weather to turn a little cooler so we can stay out there more!




I have a few other things to share, but I'll save those for another post. And maybe it won't be another month before I sit down and get my thoughts on here.

Thursday Thoughts... Observations

• Some people squeeze every single loaf of bread on the shelf before settling with the first one they squeezed in the first place.

• Moving over for oncoming traffic is a thing of the past. It's like they pretend to not see the vehicle trying to merge.

• People will speak to you in church, but will act like you don't exist outside of those doors.

• Little old ladies will stop you in a store or a restaurant to tell you how beautiful your baby is, and then proceed to tell you to cherish every minute with her because they go by too fast.

• Publix and Chick Fil A have the friendliest staff, ever.

• When someone asks for advice on a baby question, moms will judge and fight with other moms on a status or tweet because their way is "the right way".

• Mickey Mouse saying "Hey hey everybody it's me, Mickey Mouse" will stop a baby in her tracks and look straight at the television and smile.

• You can bend over backwards for someone, and they will never say thanks. But that moment they do something for you, and it's brought up in every conversation....

• Summer TV shows are better than most fall shows.

Current Favorites...

• My husband and baby girl... and I'm pretty sure they will always be the top of my favorites! I mean, who couldn't love these two. They are my world!


• Sally Hansen Miracle Gel... seriously, this stuff is great. It lasts, it dries super fast, and it looks like you paid $30 (or more) for shellac! Target has the lowest price, but CVS has the biggest selection. And this week it's buy one get one 50% off. So... go, NOW!!


• Lemons... I can't seem to get enough. It's more like "I'll have a little sweet tea with my lemons" these days. YUM!


 • Burgers... maybe I'm on a quest to find the best burger ever, or maybe I'm just loving protein right now. Whatever the case, I can tell you that my favorite burgers are from Jim N Nicks, Mugshots, Jack Brown Joint, and Dobi's Ragin' Cajun. Don't take my word for it, go try one yourself!


• Baby Girl Clothes... and trust me, my child has a TON of them. Just follow me on instagram (jhsowell) and you'll see plenty of #ootd posts with her clothes!


• Our porch... I love everything about our home, but having a big outdoor space to relax, entertain and enjoy is wonderful! Usually any company that comes over wants to go out on our porch to eat or relax. And when my parents are here visiting, you'll find my dad out there 90% of the day. And AC LOVES it out there, too!
